How We Review AI Companion Apps
Every score on this site comes from the same repeatable process. Here is exactly what we test and how we weight it.
A rating only means something if you know what's behind it. AI Boyfriend uses a fixed framework so two reviewers testing the same app reach comparable conclusions.
What we score
- Conversation quality. Does it stay in character, remember context, and respond naturally over a long chat?
- Personalization. How much control you get over personality, tone, appearance, and boundaries.
- Privacy & data handling. What is collected, how it is stored, and how clearly that is disclosed. This carries extra weight.
- Safety & moderation. Age gating, content controls, and how the app handles sensitive topics.
- Value. What the free tier offers and whether paid plans are priced fairly.
How we test
We use each app the way a real user would: a fresh account, multiple conversation styles, and at least several days of regular use so memory and consistency have a chance to show. We verify pricing and feature claims against the provider directly, following our editorial policy.
What the scores mean
Scores are relative to the current market, not absolute. As stronger apps arrive, our bar rises, which is why we revisit and update ratings over time. Reviews are written by the contributors listed on our authors page.
Some links in our guides are monetised; this never changes a score. See our affiliate disclosure for details, and our responsible use guide for healthy-use guidance.
