Character.AI Pricing: Free vs c.ai+ in 2026
Character AI is still free to use with unlimited messaging, but "free" has come to mean something narrower in 2026 than it did a year ago. Here's exactly what each tier gets you.
The free tier includes unlimited text chat and a set number of voice calls per day, standard response speed, and access to the full character library. What's changed is everything around that core offer. Mid-chat ads had already appeared in a limited form back in October 2025, but Character.AI widened that rollout sharply in February 2026 and had it fully deployed by mid-April. A separate daily cap on swipe regenerations landed on March 18, 2026, covering roughly 400 swipes a day account-wide, shared across every character you talk to. None of these changes is unusual on its own for a freemium product, but stacked together over a few months, they produced a visible shift in how the free experience feels — and a fair amount of frustration on communities like r/CharacterAI as a result.
c.ai+ pricing
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Unlimited text chat, limited voice calls, ads, swipe/Charms limits |
| c.ai+ monthly | $9.99/mo | No ads, priority access at peak times, faster responses, unlimited voice calls, unlimited swipes |
| c.ai+ annual | $94.99/yr (~$7.92/mo) | Same benefits as monthly, paid upfront |
c.ai+ removes the mid-chat ads, clears the Charms friction on swipe regenerations, unlocks unlimited voice calls, and gets you priority routing during busy hours — which matters more than it sounds, since peak congestion is when free-tier response times slow down the most. It does not remove content filtering. The subscription is a speed and convenience upgrade, not a way to unlock looser moderation, and Character.AI has been explicit about that distinction.
What are Charms?
Charms are Character.AI's newer in-app currency, currently in beta and not yet purchasable directly. You earn them through daily actions — logging in, enabling notifications, creating a character or persona, posting to the community feed — and spend them on things the free tier now gates, like extra swipe regenerations beyond the daily cap, skipping ads, or generating chat images. As of mid-2026, video clips generated through the platform's Imagine and Animate tools cost around 20 Charms each. Character.AI hasn't published exact daily earn rates, which makes it hard to know in advance how far a day's Charms will stretch.
Is c.ai+ worth it?
If you're a daily user who regenerates responses often or relies on voice calls, the math works in your favor — $9.99 a month is a reasonable trade for removing the ads and friction that now define the free tier. If you check in a few times a week, the free plan is still usable, just noticeably more annoying than it was in 2024. One catch worth flagging: Character.AI does not offer refunds on web purchases, so think about the annual plan before you commit to it rather than after.

There's no enterprise or API tier — Character AI is built purely as a consumer subscription, unlike some competitors that also sell developer access. If your priority is avoiding subscriptions altogether rather than paying for speed, our alternatives comparison covers a few platforms with cheaper or more generous free tiers.
Price isn't the whole decision, though. Our Character.AI review covers the platform end to end, the safety guide walks through the under-18 rules and lawsuits, and the beginner's guide gets you set up if you're starting fresh. And if you'd rather pay for one relationship that deepens over time than for faster access to a character library, that's the trade-off AI Boyfriend is built around.
