When? From Monday 3rd - Sunday 30th October 2016
Exhibition from members of the Wapping group of Artists.
Members have spent a busy season capturing views of the local area in the plein air tradition and display their latest creations here for all to enjoy.
The Wapping Group was founded – in a pub in Wapping, in 1946 – by a gathering of artists with the aim of recording and celebrating London and the river Thames in art. They set out to do this by meeting together once a week to paint and sketch outdoors.
Today the Wapping Group – the ‘Wappers’ to themselves and their friends – continue this same practice, in a tradition unbroken now for seventy years. The members meet every Wednesday between April and September, come rain or shine, at locations ranging from up-river locations like Henley, out to estuary towns such as Faversham and Maldon, taking in London and the City on the way, painting and sketching to record the capital’s changing scenes and skyline.
The Group remains an artists’ society, meeting primarily for the pleasure of meeting and painting together – and chewing over the day in the pub afterwards.
